Lent...

As you may know, I despise the whole idea of Lent. Unbiblical, high church tradition.

But, I think this is not too bad:

  1. One of the truly disturbing developments in today's American church is the "sacramentalization" of the radical gospel that Jesus incarnated and the Apostles lived and died for.

It's pathetic. To think that God is pleased if I give up NASCAR or cappuccino during Lent when Jesus proclaimed that to follow Him is to deny yourself and carry your cross ALWAYS.

DON'T FALL PREY TO THE HIGH CHURCH FAD. It has always killed vital faith and reduced the life of faith to ritual.

Can you imagine the people of Hebrews 11 contenting themselves with merely giving something up for 40 days as the life of faith?

  2. I do think that the trend toward activities characteristic of high church Christianity among low/free church bodies in our day is historic. Hence, the Lent fad.

IMO, the CGGC is seeking to be more like the Episcopalians and Lutherans of Winebrenner's day than the Church of God that Winebrenner established.

And, that would be fine if we were not talking Winebrenner's talk.

More and more, it seems to me that Organized Hypocrisy is the defining characteristic of the CGGC brand at this time of transition.

    We need to examine ourselves.
